Hypotheses

This section is dedicated to evidence related to such puzzling questions regarding Peyton Clements such as:

Are Benjamin Clements and Grissell Coleman of Gloucester, VA, Peyton's grandparents?
Hypothesis: Yes
Proof: Benjamin and Grissell Clements had 2 daughters who they named "Grissell", apparently naming a second daughter the same name after the first Grissell died in infancy.  This shows that the name was very important to them.  Peyton Clements' sister was named Grissell and he named his daughter Grissell.

The Burford family, with which the Clements are closely intertwined, was from Gloucester county, VA.  Daniel Burford was born in Gloucester county, VA in 1684.  Peyton Clements married Elizabeth Burford, the granddaughter of Daniel Burford.  His sister Grissell married William Burford, Elizabeth Burford's brother and also the grandson of Daniel Burford.

Who was Peyton's father?
Hypothesis: Richard Clements
Proof:  In the 1755 Tax List for Granville Co., NC, Peyton is listed as:
Peyton Clemons & Richard, 2-0-2
The first number indicates the number of white males over the age of 21; the second number indicates the number of slaves owned; and the last number is a total of the first 2 numbers.  This indicates that he was  living with a white adult male named "Richard" who is not a slave. (Note: white females and white children were not accounted for in this list; slaves of all ages were counted and listed by name).  No surname is given for Richard, but when adult males with different surnames resided together, the are listed using the full names.   Therefore, Richard was a white male over the age of 21, he was not a slave, and his last name was Clements.  He is in almost certainly not an adult child of Peyton.  Could this Richard Clements be the son of Benjamin Clements and Grissell Coleman of Gloucester, VA who was named Richard?

Was Elizabeth Burford the mother of Peyton's children?
Hypothesis: No
Proof: After Peyton's death, his children who were under 21 years were referred to as "orphans of Peyton Clements" in court documents filed by his widow Elizabeth [Burford] Clements.  If they were Elizabeth Burford's children they would not have been considered orphans.

Is Mary Clements, who married Edward Wade, Peyton's sister?
Hypothesis: Yes
